Self-Doubting

Self-Doubting이란?

Self-Esteem Test

You tend to rate yourself low and are strict with yourself. Your flaws catch your eye before your strengths do, and it's hard to truly accept a compliment even when you receive one. The thought 'I don't deserve that kind of praise' can pop up automatically. This is a type where 'self-deprecation' and 'perfectionism' — both common traits of low self-esteem — show up together. But this isn't your fault. It's a thought pattern shaped by childhood experiences, your environment, and repeated negative messages — and patterns can change.

심리학적 배경

The Self-Doubting type is closely related to what Rosenberg's (1965) scale measures as 'low self-esteem.' Rosenberg explained that people with low self-esteem don't necessarily 'dislike' themselves. It's closer to a vague unease — 'I don't really know myself' or 'I don't think I'm enough.' Beck's cognitive model (1979) explains this pattern through a 'negative self-schema.' Childhood experiences form the core belief 'I am not enough,' and from then on every experience gets filtered through that belief. Both 'filtering out compliments' and 'self-deprecation' — common low self-esteem traits — stem from this negative schema. The good news is that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can help you recognize and revise this schema. Rebuilding self-esteem isn't about mindset — it's a matter of practice.

  • Your inner critic is powerful

There's always a voice in your head saying 'you're not enough' or 'you can't even do that?' Psychology calls this the 'inner critic,' and in the Self-Doubting type, this voice is especially loud and strong. If this type came up on your self-esteem test, recognizing this voice is the starting point for rebuilding self-esteem.

  • You filter out compliments

When someone says 'great job,' you automatically dismiss it as 'they're just being polite' or 'they probably don't mean it.' This is one of the clearest traits of low self-esteem — a 'cognitive distortion' at work that ignores positive information while amplifying the negative.

  • Anything less than perfect feels meaningless

Instead of '80 is a good score,' it feels like 'anything less than 100 is failure.' This kind of perfectionistic self-esteem makes it hard to feel satisfied even after achieving something. If you score high here, you need practice acknowledging that 'I did well enough.'

  • Decisions feel scary, so you put them off

The anxiety of 'what if I decide wrong?' grows so big that you avoid deciding altogether. You ask others about even small things, or say 'whatever's fine' often. This comes from not trusting your own judgment.

  • You genuinely don't know your own strengths

Ask 'what are your strengths?' and you genuinely draw a blank. Your flaws pour out, but your strengths don't come to mind. This isn't because your self-esteem is low — it's the result of having worn a negative lens on yourself for far too long. Once you change the lens, things start to come into view.

  • Write down one thing you did well, every night

This is one of the most proven ways to build self-esteem. Every night before bed, write down just one thing you did well today. 'I went to work' or 'I made myself a meal' is enough. As the habit of acknowledging small things builds up, bigger things gradually come into view too.

  • Give your inner critic a name

Try separating that negative voice into third person: 'there it goes again, the critic.' When 'I can't do this' shifts to 'there's the critic again,' the grip that thought has on you loosens. This is a technique frequently used in ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy).

  • Practice the '80 is enough' mindset

Instead of chasing perfection, consciously practice 'this is good enough.' It'll feel uneasy at first, but you'll start to experience that the world keeps turning just fine even with an 80-point result.

  • Don't be afraid of professional counseling

If self-doubt is significantly affecting your daily life, professional counseling is worth considering. Counseling isn't 'something weak people do' — it's 'something people who want to understand themselves better do.' It's one of the most effective ways to rebuild self-esteem.
