Externally Dependent

Externally Dependent이란?

Self-Esteem Test

Your self-esteem rises and falls based on other people's reactions and evaluations. You feel great when you get approval from people around you, but you shrink easily under negative reactions. This is a type where 'dependence on others' — one of the most common traits of low self-esteem — shows up strongly. You've probably felt like you had the whole world after a compliment, only to have your day collapse over one small criticism. This isn't your fault. When childhood experiences accumulate around 'I'm only loved when I do well,' it's natural to start using others' evaluations as the measure of your own worth.

심리학적 배경

The Externally Dependent type has a strong connection to what Deci & Ryan's Self-Determination Theory calls 'contingent self-esteem.' Contingent self-esteem refers to a state where your self-esteem only rises when specific conditions (achievement, appearance, others' approval) are met. According to Kernis (2003), contingent self-esteem is often more a problem of 'stability' than 'level' — the average might not be bad, but it repeatedly spikes and crashes depending on the situation. Coopersmith (1967) also explained that low 'social self-esteem' leads to excessive dependence on others' reactions. The 'dependence on others' trait common in low self-esteem often stems from this social self-esteem dimension.

이런 특징이 있어요

  • Other people's evaluations control your mood

When someone says 'great job,' your whole day lights up; when they say 'not great,' you crash. If the Externally Dependent type came up on your self-esteem test, you probably often feel like the remote control to your own mood is in someone else's hands. Psychology calls this 'contingent self-esteem.'

  • Recognition sends your energy soaring

Compliments, likes, approval — positive feedback like this sends your self-esteem skyrocketing. It's less that this is a low self-esteem trait, and more that the source of your self-esteem sits with 'others' instead of 'yourself.' When that recognition is absent for a while, your energy drops fast.

  • Rejection feels like a rejection of you

'No' might just mean 'that particular offer doesn't fit,' not 'I dislike you,' but the Externally Dependent type tends to take it as a rejection of your entire self. That's why even small rejections sting deeply.

  • Social media becomes your self-esteem barometer

Your mood shifts with the number of likes and comments on a post. Good engagement makes you feel 'maybe I am okay,' while no response triggers 'of course, I'm...' This is one of the most pronounced patterns on a self-esteem test.

  • Comparing yourself to others has become a habit

It's not a conscious choice to compare — you automatically measure yourself against others. Thoughts like 'they're doing so well, but I...' or 'everyone else looks happy...' come up often. If you're looking for ways to build self-esteem, recognizing this automatic comparison is the place to start.

이렇게 해보면 어때?

  • Build your own standards, one at a time

The first step in rebuilding self-esteem is shifting your measuring stick from 'other people's' to 'your own.' Ask yourself, 'what kind of person do I want to be?' and write down the answer. It's practice in evaluating yourself by standards you set, not standards others expect.

  • Keep a compliment journal

Write down not just praise from others but one compliment you give yourself, every day. It'll feel awkward at first, but this habit helps move the source of your self-esteem from external to internal — one of the easiest, most practical ways to build self-esteem.

  • Try a social media detox

Turn off social media notifications or hide your like counts for just a week. You need time to recover the sense that 'I'm okay' even without others' reactions.

  • Practice the idea that 'rejection ≠ rejection of me'

When someone turns down your suggestion, consciously think, 'this just didn't fit the situation, it's not that I'm bad.' It won't feel believable at first, but with repetition, the automatic thought begins to shift. Cognitive behavioral therapy calls this 'cognitive restructuring.'
