Cognitive Distortion Pattern Test

You have a thought pattern that habitually connects things happening around you to yourself. If a friend's expression is dark, your first thought is 'Is it my fault?', and if your boss is in a bad mood, 'What did I do wrong?' automatically comes to mind. You feel you are the cause even in unrelated events, and interpret all signals as pointing toward you. This is the cognitive distortion 'Personalization' classified by David Burns—a pattern of excessively attributing the cause of external events to yourself.

심리학적 배경

The Personalizer pattern combines 'Personalization' as its core, along with 'Mind Reading' and 'Blaming' from the cognitive distortions classified by David Burns (1980). Beck (1976) viewed this as a form of 'selective abstraction', a pattern of selectively extracting and interpreting only self-referential meaning from others' behaviors. Personalization makes you feel an excessive sense of responsibility for external events beyond your control. This pattern often originates from experiences in unpredictable or authoritarian parenting environments where one had to quickly read the other person's mood.

이런 특징이 있어요

  • Connecting external events to yourself

You feel 'I am the cause' of someone else's mood, a team's failure, or even a change in the atmosphere. But most things happen independently of you. Your boss being in a bad mood might just be because they didn't sleep well last night.

  • All the world's signals point to me

Passing laughter feels like they are mocking you, and you feel it's your fault if the team leader is in a bad mood. You are pulling all events toward you like a magnet. But most things happen independently of you.

  • Trying to find the cause and responsibility

When a problem occurs, you always try to find out 'Is it my fault, or yours?'. You only feel satisfied when you can point out someone to take responsibility. But sometimes things just happen. Not everything needs to have a person responsible.

이 유형의 숨겨진 강점

  • •Deeply considerate because you are sensitive to others' emotions
  • •Excellent at quickly reading the atmosphere and responding
  • •Can detect conflicts in relationships in advance
  • •Has the analytical skill to try and grasp the cause of a problem

이렇게 해보면 어때?

  • Ask directly before being certain

Asking 'Did I do something wrong by any chance?' is much faster than agonizing alone for days. Mostly, you'll get the answer 'No, why?'.

  • Think once that it might 'not be because of me'

When your boss looks unhappy, try bringing up an alternative explanation like 'They might have just not slept well last night'. It's practice to not connect everything to yourself.

  • Shift from 'fault' to 'What should we do next?'

If you use the energy spent finding the cause on finding the solution, it becomes much lighter. Blaming is holding onto the past, but solutions open up the future.
