Emotional Reasoner이란?
Cognitive Distortion Pattern Test
You have a thought pattern that uses emotions as evidence for facts. Feelings literally become reality, like 'I feel anxious, so it must be dangerous', or 'I feel bad, so something must be wrong'. This is also combined with a pattern of negatively predicting things that haven't happened yet, and magnifying a single experience into 'always' or 'never'. When emotions crash in like waves, you believe those waves are reality.
심리학적 배경
The Emotional Reasoner is a pattern combining 'Emotional Reasoning', 'Fortune Telling', and 'Overgeneralization' from Burns (1980). In this pattern, the intensity of emotion acts as evidence of a fact. In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), this is called the 'emotional reasoning error', and training to separate emotion from fact is a core intervention method. It is also connected to Kahneman's (2011) concept of 'System 1 (Thinking, Fast)'—a mechanism where intuitive and emotional judgments are accepted as reality without logical verification.
이런 특징이 있어요
Emotions become evidence of reality
You use the intensity of your emotions as evidence of facts, like 'I'm anxious, so it's dangerous', or 'I'm depressed, so I've failed'. But emotions change like the weather. Just because you are anxious right now doesn't mean it's truly a dangerous situation.
Predicting a negative future
In the face of a new challenge, you preemptively conclude 'It won't work anyway', or 'I will definitely fail'. You are looking at a dark future through a cloudy crystal ball. But 90% of what you worry about doesn't actually happen.
Magnifying one experience into forever
You magnify a single event into an endlessly repeating pattern, like 'It didn't work this time, so it will continue to fail', or 'I'm always like this'. Exceptional situations feel like rules.

Try separating facts from feelings
'I am feeling anxious' is different from 'It is dangerous'. Name the emotion, but practice not using it as evidence of a fact.
Record every time your prediction misses
Check if the things you worried about actually happened. As you confirm that they mostly miss, you'll realize how cloudy your crystal ball really is.
Change 'always' and 'never' to 'this time'
The past does not determine the future. If you narrow the scope from 'I always fail' to 'It didn't go well this time', your mind will feel much lighter.
